URBAN
TRANSPORTATION
1.
The PUV Lane Scheme The PUV Lane scheme was adopted primarily
to reduce travel time in all Public Utility Vehicles (PUVs) especially
in buses, and to reduce waiting time of passengers at the BUS/PUJ stops.
It involves the distribution of vehicle volume in the limited road space
by allotting two (2) lanes to PUVs with the objective of improving public
transport service in EDSA.
2.
The Organized Bus Route Project (OBR) - To complement
the PUV Lane scheme, the OBR was conceived to improve the operation of
bus services at EDSA by controlling the headways between buses dispatched
at the terminals and by strictly enforcing the rules on the use of loading
and unloading areas. Through this, bus volume is reduced, thus increasing
travel speed in this main thoroughfare.
3.
Site Identification and development of PUV Stands/ Terminals
- Part of the total package to instill order in the roads is the establishment
of Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) stands/terminals in major thoroughfares,
so that the drivers of the public utility vehicles would not crowd and
cause traffic as they wait and load passengers along major routes.
The program
allows the association of public utility vehicle operators and drivers
to load and unload their passengers along a loading/bay, two at a time,
provided that they establish a terminal in a lot adjacent to the bay,
where the rest of their members would station their vehicles while waiting
for their turn to load passengers at the designated area. |
