Traffic Programs and Activities

Foremost of the traffic management programs for Metro Manila are the modified traffic schemes such as the Big Rotonda Scheme, the Counterclockwise/Clockwise Traffic Flow System, Clearways, all of which are being implemented to remove intersection conflicts and to make possible the free flow of vehicles in the major thoroughfares.

These traffic schemes have been initially implemented in EDSA and Quezon Avenue, and are scheduled to be implemented in all major roads to allow vehicles uninterrupted flow, especially at the main roads.

To complement these traffic schemes are other equally important aspects of the traffic management program, namely:

MAJOR THRUSTS:

1. Clearing Operations – All sidewalks in the major thoroughfares are being cleared of all forms of obstructions along the road such as, but not limited to illegal vendors and movable/permanent structures; illegally parked vehicles; unnecessary road humps that slow down traffic flow, except in areas where elementary schools are located.

2. Parking Discipline Program – The Traffic Operations Center has initiated the identification and installation of roadway and easement parking signs through its Parking Discipline Program.

3. Road Emergency Stations
- Another priority program is the establishment of nine (9) road emergency stations in strategic areas of the metropolis. The stations are designed to enable the traffic personnel to immediately act and remove all forms of road obstructions within fifteen (15) minutes. The stations are manned by fully trained and skilled rescue personnel and Traffic Investigators. In addition, the facility is equipped with the necessary apparatus and facilities to remove all forms of road obstructions, such as tow trucks, crane trucks, ambulances, rescue and emergency vehicles, traffic motorcycle units, etc.,

Presently, there are three (3) road emergency stations which are already operating in Timog Avenue, Aurora/C5 Road and in Nagtahan, Three (3) more stations have also been set up in Baclaran, Camachile and in T. M. Kalaw.

4. Cleaning of Roadways – MMDA undertakes the
regular cleaning and maintenance of roadways and street furniture and structures.
