2014 DETAILS

What is the New Wave Feature Film? The "Tribute to Independent Cinema" in 2010 was a non-competitive event for the Independent genre, which the Festival later called New Wave. Five independent films were screened in Robinson’s Theater as a prelude to the MMFF opening on December 25, 2010. In 2011, MMDA Chairman Francis N. Tolentino, inspired by the continued popularity of independent films in the country announced the addition of the New Wave Section to widen the scope of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).


Rules and Mechanics

  1. Only entries directed and produced by Filipino citizens or of Filipino descent will be accepted.
  1. Only entries which have not been featured in other local festivals and competitions are qualified.
  1. Entries must have a minimum total running time of seventy five (75) minutes.
  1. Entries selected as finalists may not withdraw from the competition, otherwise, a Fifty Thousand Peso (P50,000.00) fine will be imposed and other penalties/charges as may deemed necessary by the festival.
  1. The entries must have been completed from the year 2013 onwards.
  1. Entries shall not have been, in any way, commercially exhibited.

Entry Requirements

The following requirements must be submitted on or before October 07, 2014 at the Office of the MMFF Secretariat, Office of the Chairman, MMDA Main Bldg. EDSA cor. Orense St. Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati City:

  1. Five (5) copies of the film entry in DVD playable / AVI format in regular 5x5 inch CD case with slip-on cover containing the following information:
    • Entry Title
    • Total Running Time (TRT)
    • Genre
    • Production Company Address
    • Contact Numbers
    • Director’s name
  1. Duly accomplished application form;
  1. Hard copy of the film’s synopsis;
  1. Poster Design; and
  1. Thirty-second movie trailer in DVD playable and AVI format.

Awards and Recognition

The Metro Manila Film Festival recognizes and awards only the most finely produced films and screenplays, and the following awards will be bestowed accordingly:

 Best Picture - PhP 300,000.00 
 Special Jury Prize - PhP 200,000.00
 Best Actor - PhP 50,000.00
 Best Actress - PhP 50,000.00
Best Director - PhP 50,000.00


Aside from the above cash prizes, the 5 finalists of the Full Feature Film Competition will also be given commercial showing in at least 20 cinemas all over Metro Manila.

What is the New Wave Animation Competition?

Animation has been a thriving art in the international filmmaking scene and has been making its way to the Philippine film industry and with a number of animation movies entered to the Metro Manila Film Festival in recent years, the MMFF created the Animation Category in 2013.


Rules and Mechanics

  1. The competition is open to all Filipino professional and student/amateur animators.
  1. Entries must have a maximum total running time of twelve (12) minutes.
  1. The entries must have been completed from the year 2013 onwards.
  1. Entries shall not have been, in any way, commercially exhibited here and/or abroad. "Commercially exhibited" means any show, display or presentation intended for viewing by members of the general public, the audience thereof being required to pay or give valuable consideration, monetary or otherwise, in exchange for viewing the same. Any film entry which has been shown in any regular, advance or preview screening for valuable consideration whether in movie theaters, television or other media or venue, shall be disqualified; provided: any non-revenue advance or preview screening for promotional purposes only shall not be disqualified as long as the producer shall submit at the time of applying as an entry for the film festival a sworn statement attesting to the non-revenue and promotional nature of the said exhibition.
  1. Everything is assumed to be an original creation. In case copyrighted characters, scripts, music, etc. are used, the entrant cannot submit the animated work without securing agreement/permission from the copyright owner. An original certification from the copyright owner (artist/record company/producer) is required to be submitted together with the entry. Failure to acknowledge, provide credit or obtain such agreement will result in the works being disqualified from the competition.
  1. Any kind of modification except addition of necessary subtitles will not be allowed for the final entries.
  1. The decision of the Board of Jurors is final and irrevocable. The board reserves the right to give an award in any category should no entry merit it and the organizers and the Board of Jurors are not obliged to justify their decision.
  1. MMFF reserves the right to create, revoke, and modify at any time, in any way its entry requirements, rules and regulations at its absolute discretion without prior notice. Finalists and submitted entries shall be bound by any amendments or addition to the entry requirements, rules and regulations herewith.
  1. All participants are deemed to have accepted the rules of the contest, and agree to abide thereby.
  1. All submitted entries and materials required by MMFF shall remain in the Festival’s archives, but the copyright of the material remains with the producer/director/creator.

Entry Requirements

The following requirements must be submitted on or before September 17, 2014 at the Office of the MMFF Secretariat, Office of the Chairman, MMDA Main Bldg. EDSA cor. Orense St. Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati City:

  1. 5 DVDs – must contain a color bar of 10 seconds and followed by a sound signal 0dbs (1,000 cycles per second) and a black leader of 5 seconds at the beginning. Technical specifications: full or high-resolution .avi data file, with a frame size of 720 x 480, and a compression of DV NTSC.
  1. The film filename shall have the following format:

       
    [Luzon|Visayas|Mindanao]_<School_Initials>_<Title>_
              <Surname_of_Representative>.[mp4|mov|avi|etc.]


    e.g. 
    Luzon_UE_Find Love_Soriano.mov

Selection of Finalists

Five (5) entries will be chosen as finalists and will be shown at a selected cinema(s) from December 17-24, 2013. Chosen finalists must comply with the following additional requirements in preparation for judges’ and public screening:

  1. Five (5) copies of the film entry’s 5-10-second movie trailer in DVD / AVI format.
  1. Film entry with English subtitles (if the language used is other than Filipino language) in DCP format.
  1. Two (2) Playbill Poster Designs, 20 inches by 30 inches (20” x 30”) and in JPEG format in burned CDs (Soft Copies).
  1. Additional requirements as may be determined by the New Wave Committee.

By virtue of Metro Manila Commission Executive Order No. 86-09, pursuant to Presidential Proclamation Nos. 1459, 1485, 1533, 1533-A and 1647, the MMFF is held during the Christmas Season in recognition of the role of the film industry in providing artistic depictions of both this country's stories and history. An Executive Committee, headed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman and composed of key members of the film industry, supervises this annual event.
